GUTTER-DOWNSPOUT MAINTENANCE, CLEAN OUT, REPAIR, SAFETY
As the fall season approaches, now would be a good time for some gutter-downspout maintenance. With the advent of falling leaves, pine needles and twigs, it is wise to clean out any accumulated debris. Properly functioning gutters and downspouts will help prevent damage to your home and foundation, prevent overflow, and keep guests from getting soaked from roof water runoff during rainstorms.
You should check the gutters for proper attachment to the fascia boards, and repair, or have repaired, if they are loose, rusted, leaking or damaged. You also want to check for proper pitch to the downspouts. An improperly sloped gutter will not drain effectively, and debris will collect in the low areas of the gutter. This will cause water backup, ineffective draining, and possibly eventual corrosion or failure, with the added weight inside the gutter channel. The downspouts should also drain into deflectors or extensions away from the foundation, or into an underground drainage system, so rain water cannot collect around the foundation, where it could infiltrate into the basement area.
OF COURSE, SAFETY IS FIRST AND FOREMOST WHEN INSPECTING THE GUTTER SYSTEM. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CLIMB A LADDER IF YOU ARE NOT COMPLETELY CONFIDENT OR ABLE, AND WATCH OUT FOR HIGH-VOLTAGE OVERHEAD POWER LINES!
